Post subject:  Chilly thinks he's a goat............

This is my very first post and I did a bit of checking, but couldn't really get a good idea from other posts so here's my question..........

Chilly is right at a year old, although we've only had him about 6 months, he was a rescue pup. He's taken to eating grass on a regular basis. He's been completely vet'd, shots, deworming, etc........the works. But he still thinks he's a billy goat.

I don't know if the old wives tale is true about settling his stomach or not but I have seen no ill effects to him eating grass. His bowel movements are normal and regular has no issues with urination.............his activity is normal (at least for him anyway)..........it just strikes me as a bit odd. His diet is good, eats regularly drinks tons of water and sleeps his normal 18 hours a day (to be honest, I have no idea how many hours he sleeps, but it seems normal anyway).

He is our second basset. Our previous basset didn't do it so this is new to me.............is everything normal or should I take him back to the vet. It's just now beginning to be spring here so grass is starting to grow and is abundant so it's becoming more regular behavior. I didn't ask the vet at his last visit because it was so infrequent I didn't even think about it. Should I be concerned and take him back to the vet or just let him graze.......Thanks.

I would be concern with them eating toxic plants and way too much grass.

Doctors Foster & Smith has a Pet Education website with their opinion.

My dog also likes to eat grass. Although we live on the third floor so we don't have a yard (yet) but last summer i did catch him doing it many times. They say it helps settle the stomach but I don't think that's the issue, i think he just likes the taste. I haven't been concerned about it but he doesn't eat high amounts...

Thanks........I've been monitoring it lately since I posted this a while back. He doesn't do it every day, but several times a week and I don't let him get his fill. I let him do a little muching and then we move on.......I'm gonna see what happens. Like I said, his behavior is normal other than eating grass.

Thanks,

My Charlie is 3 and he always eats grass too. Like the other person said, I think he just likes the flavor of it because he doesn't have any stomach problems and his bowel movements are normal. I don't think its a big deal, but it is curious! The one thing I worry about is him accidentally eating a foxtail, but he seems only to like regular grass.

plant a patch of lemon grass, it is actually good for them, and what they don't eat you can use as a spice when cooking chicken and fish. My wife grows lots of herbs in pots in the back yard, being careful not to grow anything that would be bad for them, and they graze on stuff all the time.

That being said, one of our pups still likes grass, doesn't really eat much of it, but likes to chew and play with it, the other one likes to chew and play with rocks. That drives me crazy as I know it is not good for her.
