Yesterday upon our return from holiday we picked our bassets (Bessie and Rupert) up from thier luxury dog kennels and they were both well excited to see both my wife and i but when we got home and i was cuddling Bessie i noticed a lump about the size of a marble about 2 inches from one of her nipples. it was too late to go to the vets so i waited till morning and the lump had got bigger by about 50%, showed my wife who whipped her to the vets and they said they are 90% sure its mastitis and although i do trust them i would like to know if anyone else has had any experience with mastitis in basset hounds i have uploaded a picture to show the lump.
The vet has prescribed her
Noroclav 250mg (amoxicillin 200mg and clavulanic acid 50mg) to take 1 twice a day and,
Loxicom 1.5mg/ml (i have 10ml of this to give her once tonight with food).
Any advice and tips would be helpful as i have read that a warm hot water bottle will help her.
She doesnt seem to be in pain but is very tired.

Chris and Donna Pickering

I need to add that bessie was spayed at 6 months i think so she cant and never has had puppies.

False pregnancy can enlarge the mammary glands and even have a case of mastitis............even in spayed females.

Mastitis can also occur in spayed dogs as Bassets are lower to the ground and can easily pick-up bacteria from the ground.

I would agree with your Vet on it does sound like mastitis.......It can become large in a matter of no time.

Mastitis in spayed females is not common but not unheard of.

Last time I had one with mastitis, I just used warm compresses on it as well as the meds..........Luckily you will not have to worry about nursing pups during it.

The warm compress helps reduce the swelling.

Make sure you keep bedding clean and after her bathroom outings, clean her belly to help prevent bacteria.
