We have a 4 month old basset with whom we're still having problems with in terms of potty training. We live in an apartment, and had him pad trained for the first few weeks, still taking him outside, but he was either going on the pad or outside. We've been weaning him off of the pad, taking him out very often, etc.

We were really pleased this weekend when we went out of town and stayed in a house - he was perfect - he would sit in front of the door and wait until we took him out, and he only went outside (he didn't have any accidents inside the house) but when we came back home, he started going inside the house again.

needless to say, we need help!

Have you looked at the Potty Training Articles in this section about potty training and crate training?

Bassets can be a little obtuse to things they don't deem important.. Our bassets are now a year old, and have been house broken for a long time. But last week our female decided she would just go where she was, in or out and we had to go through a day of retraining,, taking her out more often and praising her and treating her when she went outside. Now she seems to be back to normal.

Our poor male, when she would pee in the house, would go to the door whether he needed to go or not.
