Where did your Basset's name come from?

We had three different names picked out (Rossi, Ellis, and Charley--boyfriends uncle Chuck died of brain cancer the day we got him), but we were not sure which one we really wanted. We decided to let the puppy choose. When we got him home, we called him by all three names. He completely ignored us when we called him Ellis and Charley, but he instantly looked at us and tilted his head to the side when we called him Rossi, so that name stuck. Rossi came from Valentino Rossi, a motogp racer.

I have a theme with my Bassets on old fashion names when I get them as pups:

Uncle Remus
Uncle Cletus
Uncle Otis
Miss Ethel
Miss Ida Mae
Miss Myrtle

our name Ruby was chosen for us (we adopted our dog).

funny thing is that ruby was one of our final few options when we had our baby daughter (decided on Alice for her in the end).

When we bought Droop the breeder had unofficially named him Spike. We had only saw pics of him online and didnt feel it was an appropriate name for him.
When i picked him up I took one look at hime and knew his name would be Night Shift Droop.
Night Shift being our kennel name and Droop due to the fact every part of him seemed to have a droop to it

Shirley.....named after Dame Shirley Bassey

Scarlet...a funny story.....whilst our late basset was giving birth, we were watching "gone with the wind"...as Tessa was pushing, she did a massive FART and out came a Puppy....we named her Scarlet as she came out with the wind

Dinky aka Jessy....we originally called her Jessy but as she grew big her bum stayed small so mum said she had a dinky bum......Dinky

Barney was coming to his eighth year when he came to live with me. It crossed my mind to change his name but then when we met, he looked like a Barney and seemed to like the name Barney. So Barney it had to stay.

Hello, a little late in the conversation...
I like people names, I have a Camyla, a Margareth and now a Elisa.
The older male came to me already named Napoleon ( but in the pappers Ben) so I called his son Big Ben ( he was the first to be born and always huge... ).
In the future I´ll have one Aurora :)

My donkey´s name is Cecilia ( because of the Paul Simon´s song), and I have 2 stray dogs also with people names: Maria and Rita.

Some people don´t like this but I don´t find offensive...

As long as this thread is moving again..

We are planning on getting two pups this spring.
We are leaning toward two females but it will depend on the pups personality when we first meet them.

But we already have names picked out,,
Two females it will be Buttercup and Marmalade. Types of food, because bassets love food. And actually from movies, Princess Buttercup from "The Princess Bride" and Lady Marmalade song from the movie "Moulin Rouge."

If we end up with a male and a female the names will be
Zatarra and Mercedes. From the book and movie "The Count of Monte Cristo".

If we end up with two males the names will be
Zatarra and Jacopo, also from "The Count of Monte Cristo".

I joked with the wife that seeing basset means low set, and they originated in France we should name one LJ, for Low-Jacque and the other one JB for Just-Basset.

We have 4 bassets....My daughter named our first one Humphrey after a basset hound on one of her favorite shows from disney. My youngest daughter who was 3 when we bought our second name wanted to name her Angella but we went with Ella for short and added Mae so there we have Ella Mae, the other females where given to us and there names were already established, they are Darcy and Daisy Duke. I would love to get another male one day, if I do get one his name will be Clyde!

My two bassets are Lovely Lucy and Ellie May. Bassets are so funny and always getting into some sort of mischief, so we named Lucy after Lucille Ball. "Lucy! You got some explainin to do!" and " Eh Lucy!! I'm Home!"

The new basset we are welcoming home this week is a lemon and white girl. So I was trying to find something lemonish or blonde for her. I thought of Blondie but had a bad experience with a lady who calls herself Blondie on the internet. So I thought of Ellie May on Beverly Hillbillies. Ellie May just has a nice basset ring to it! So Ellie it is!
A friend of mine has Buttercup and Rosebud too. :)
