I have been looking into owning a basset hound recently but I want to make sure it's the dog for me. I really want a dog that is obedient and likes to run and play with me. I'm looking for more of a campanion to do things with me and others although not running crazy all day in the house. I have a small min pin and a cat that goes in and out constantly. Please let me know your opinions anything is appreciated.

Thanks

Bassets are scent hounds and alot of them keep their noses to the ground........basically a leash type dog as they will wander where their nose leads them. Only time I do not keep them on the leash is loading them here at the house or in the field when hunting............everywhere else, I keep them on a lead.

As far as obedient, they can be on the stubborn side (hard headed).

Not sure what activities you are looking to do as you mentioned a companion to do things with. Depending on the activity, my Lab works better than my Bassets. If going for an hike in rough terrain, fishing, and etc..., I take the Lab as he will not wonder off and don't need to to be on a leash.

They do require excerice and can be VERY ACTIVE dogs. I have some that are speed burners and some that are slow when running.......they will do a "Basset 500" so you need to stand back, LOL.

My Bassets hate a cat, but I know others who own Bassets that live and socialize with their cats.

Bassets are great companion/family dog, but they are a Hound after all -- stubborn, noisy, and etc...

They are prone to ear infections because of the long ears (need to regulary clean their ears). The breed is prone to bloat.

Not sure where you are located, but check our homepage for links to Basset Rescue and Basset Events so you can get first hand around Bassets and their owners to learn more about them.
