I have always had a hard time getting Rossi to eat since the first day I brought him home. I have gone through probably 4-6 different types of food throughout the 2.5 years that I have had him until I finally decided to stop trying and stuck with Evo Herring and Salmon (one of the only ones with glucosamine and chondroitin) for about the last year with the thought, "If he's hungry, he'll eat it!"

Within the last few months, he has been trying to reach food on the counter (sometimes successfully) which he rarely ever does, and I happened to notice that it was ALWAYS with chicken, never anything else. Don't get me wrong, he loves any and all scraps he can get his mouth on, but he has never deliberately tried to pull stuff off of the counters. Also, while going through posts on here, I learned that Bassets are prone to bloat. I didn't know that before, and after watching Rossi more, I noticed he did seem to bloat with the food I was giving him, which is probably a big reason he wasn't wanting to eat. I know I wouldn't want to eat if I felt uncomfortable from bloating all the time!

After my observation, I spent a good hour at our small local pet store analyzing all the different types of foods they have (all chicken flavors). I had it narrowed down to three, and went with my gut for the final decision and chose Canidae brand, and since it lacks glucosamine and chondroitin, I bought a supplement as well. This is the FIRST time he has been consistently excited to eat and actually RUNS to his dish! He does not bloat and has more energy. I work from home, and about two hours before I'm off work, he has been ready to play and is bringing me every toy and ball he can find when typically he sleeps until I'm done.

I was getting so frustrated when all I had to do was really observe what was going on with him instead of pulling my hair out trying to get him to eat! I know this is a long and pretty pointless post, but I'm excited for my boy! :D

Glad my pack has no food issues. Glad you found something that is working for you.
